I honestly never thought this day would come! I can't believe it, but Dell actually released a ROM update for the x50/x50v Pocket PCs. If you read my old blog, you have some idea how frustrated I've been with Dell for the past... say... YEAR over the completely worthless $40 upgrade to WM5 they provided. The new version apparently includes "AKU 2.3.1 for Windows Mobile 5.0, and enhancements to wireless roaming, CF memory cards, the CF modem driver, microphone, and ActiveSync connectivity". Schweet!
And funny thing... As I was leaving work tonight for a long 4 day weekend, I decided not to bring home my Axim dock thinking I wouldn't need it. I'll probably have to pop by work to pick it up tomorrow at this point. Wish me luck on the upgrade!
Have you tried it? How is it working for you?

Don't get too excited. I'm not the next Web 2.0 startup promising to "integrate rss-capable web services" or "beta-test peer-to-peer value". I found some great Web 2.0 BS generators on the web tonight and thought I'd share:
So how about it? Should I go ahead and register "schmoolum.com" or "infonobo.com"?

Folks who know me know that I drink a lot of coffee. I probably drink 3-4 large cups in the morning, at least 1 more in the afternoon, and sometimes I treat myself to a cup with dinner. It's those cold mornings that really get me. There's nothing like a cup of piping hot coffee to wake you up on that 6am commute (I go in early to avoid traffic so I can get better mileage). SmartHome's 12v & USB heated travel mug
is what I need. While you're in the car, plug it into the cig. lighter for hot coffee on the go. When you get to work, plug it into your PC to keep the cup hot all day. Mmm...

Looks like the 2nd firmware update has been released for the Zune portable digital media player. According to Microsoft, the update fixes some glitches. CrunchGear reports that the user experience does in fact feel smoother after applying the update. Of course, if you own a Zune, you probably figured this out today when you plugged it in. If you don't own a Zune
, what are you waiting for?

It's this kind of thing that I really love about the web. You can be ultra-connected, ultra-geeky, and ultra-online and STILL not know about the top 5 most popular blogs out there... I've been catching up on CrunchGear.com and TechCrunch.com tonight. Great stuff!
I also read about winksite.com on the Communiteer blog tonight. What do you think, should I wink-ify JoeFuture?

The hypermiling guide I referred to in the previous post turned out to be right! After 6 months driving my car, this article has done more to improve my mileage than all the experimentation & coasting I've tried so far. The best tip turned out to be "EV-glide mode" - a sweet spot on the acceleration curve where only the electric motor is engaged. Using this technique, I went from 43.4 to 46.2 mpg on my commute home tonight! Granted, I'm only about 75 miles into the tank, but at this rate, I expect to hit closer to 48 for the tank average. I can't wait until my next fresh tank to really push the limits!

From CleanMPG.com, user tarabell posted this excellent article complete with scientific experimentation testing various driving strategies with the Honda Civic Hybrid. The article goes into depth about why various approaches work better than others, how to drive on flat roads vs. hills, why you shouldn't run at higher than 1900 rpm, and why slow = better mileage. There's even a hack to gain an extra .2 mpg by disabling some electronics features (I won't spoil the hack, you'll have to read the article for yourself).

If you're one of the 2 people who read this blog (including myself), you might have noticed the site was down for a couple of days. That's because the server we're hosted on is in the Pacific Northwest and suffered from power outages. Looks like things are slowing coming back online, but from what I understand, it's going to be a long time before all the damage is repaired and life returns to normal. My best wishes to everyone in that part of the country!!!

Here's an interesting perspective article by Leander Kahney from Wired News on how much he likes the Zune and why. Read: In Praise of the Zune.

Smartphone Thoughts is reporting that Verizon Wireless will roll out their fancy new black Motorola Q
phone tomorrow. It looks just like the silver model, only it's black. Apparently this version also comes with a minor software update that fixes some bugs and improves the battery life. No word yet on whether the update will be available for silver Q owners (although in my opinion, if VZW has a software update that improves battery life, why wouldn't they roll it out broadly?)

Well, I still stand by my car buying tips, but given what happened today, I need to issue a rant.
One of the dealers who had given me a good quote was contacted by the dealer I eventually went with (to confirm the quote I believe). Well, this guy wasn't pleased that I shopped around his quote and tried to lay a guilt trip on me for not honoring his quote.
Rant on...
This guy's in the wrong business. If he doesn't think his customers are shopping around for the best deal possible and he's offended by a little trickery not unlike his own "talking to my manager" (yeah, about the weather), then he needs to find another job.
I had never agreed to buy this car. In fact, I only ever asked him questions: "What's your best price?" "Are you sure this is your best price?" "What's your process for reserving a car?" Ok, so maybe that last question might have him thinking he's hooked a buyer, but a sale isn't a sale until the ink is dry.
The nerve of this guy to e-mail me multiple times during the day with his guilt crap is unbelievable. I even called the dealer I ended up buying from to ask if I'd crossed some ethical boundary, and he assured me this type of thing happens all the time between their dealerships and it's just part of the business. Of course, he won my money, so what does he have to cry about? But I really feel like believing him.
So I'm not going to lodge any kind of formal complaint about this guy unless the e-mails keep coming and they escalate, but by gosh... if this guy thinks he's going to get any future business from me or any word-of-mouth referrals (other than to net a low quote), he's sorely mistaken. Anyone want to buy a Honda? Send me mail and I'll give you my personal list dealerships I've had great experiences at. There are 3 now, and they're all different :)

My wife does'nt get poker. She doesn't like that I obsess about poker. She doens't understand the appeal of it. From talking to my friends, I think a lot of other wives feel the same way.
I think if we had more successful big name female poker players out there paving the way for women, then our wives would have some role models to look at and say "wow... that lady likes poker and she's making a lot of money, so maybe it's not so bad afterall".
Or maybe not, but at least it would be worth a shot.
